Emotional Drama
Project Overview
Seventeen-year-old Kailah seems to have everything a girl her age could want: close friends, a loving family, and a life that continues to move forward. But seven months after her father’s death in a car accident, she is struggling with a pain that nobody around her truly understands.
What nobody knows is that Kailah witnessed the accident herself. She had left school early that day because she wasn’t feeling well. When she saw her father’s car, she wanted to wave to him. Instead, she witnessed the moment that changed her life forever.
Since then, Kailah has become an expert at pretending she is okay. Behind her smiles and everyday conversations, she struggles with PTSD, flashbacks, and the fear of confronting memories she cannot escape. Her trauma begins to cost her experiences and moments that should be part of being seventeen. Yet, surrounded by friends and family, she feels increasingly alone.
At home, her mother repeatedly suggests therapy, hoping to help her daughter heal. But Kailah doesn’t want another solution. She wants someone to listen, to understand her pain, and to recognize that she is not okay, even when she says she is.
When Kailah decides to stay home rather than join her class on a three-day trip, afraid of experiencing a flashback away from home, a head counselor begins speaking with her. For the first time, Kailah opens up about what she has been carrying. But the trust she places in the counselor is broken when the counselor, feeling responsible and afraid of being the only person who knows, shares the secret with Kailah’s mother. What was meant as an act of concern leaves Kailah feeling exposed and betrayed.
After this experience, trusting someone becomes even harder. But an unexpected connection offers her another possibility. Through her best friend’s cousin, someone she has encountered only a few times but remembers as a person who can keep a confidence, Kailah begins to believe that perhaps there is someone who will listen without judging her or taking control of her story.
Eventually, Kailah finds the courage to speak openly about what happened that day and begins therapy, taking her first steps toward facing her trauma.
UNDERSTAND ME! is an intimate emotional drama about grief, trauma, and the loneliness of feeling misunderstood. Through the experience of a teenager who hides her pain behind the appearance of being okay, the film explores the difference between trying to fix someone and truly listening to them. At its heart, it is a story about trust, vulnerability, and the life-changing power of being seen and heard.
